A colloidal route to prepare high-flux γ-Al2O3 NF membrane

Abstract:
Colloidal route is an environmental benign process for the preparation of ceramic membranes without using organic solvent. A stable colloidal boehmite sol with an average particle size of 16 nm was prepared from aluminum tri-sec-butoxide by using H2Oas solvent in the pH value of 3-4. The stable sol was used to fabricateγ-Al2O3 NF membranes on α-Al2O3 MF substrates through a dip-coating approach. The effects of calcination temperature and dipping time were investigated. As the dipping time was 60 s and the calcination temperature was 600 ℃, γ-Al2O3 NF membranes with an average membrane thickness of 1.8 μm were obtained. The MWCO of γ-Al2O3 NF membranes, obtained by filtration of an aqueous PEG solution, was about 1000 Da, which corresponds to an average pore size of ca. 1.6 nm. Meanwhile, the NF membranes showed relative high pure water flux (~20 L m-2h-1bar-1). Colloidal route is suitable for the preparation of γ-Al2O3 NF membrane.
