Abstract: |
The performance of the nascent functional layer of composite membrane is discussed. The nascent functional layer is loose and spongy, shows high permeate flux and low salt rejection. Under a certain pressure, it is compressed continuously, its permeate flux drops, and its salt rejection increases, until it becomes stable. The higher is the pressure, the shorter time is needed for the membrane to reach equilibrium. Once the nascent functional layer is compressed, it is irreversible. |
